Executive portfolio dashboard for contractors
A portfolio page and a one-page executive KPI view, with drill-through from any project to its detail.
The problem
Owners and executives want one answer to 'how is the business doing' and get a stack of project reports in different formats. By the time those are rolled up, the numbers are weeks old and the conversation is about whose spreadsheet is right.
What we build
We build a portfolio page that lists every project with contract, cost at completion, percent complete, margin at completion and a risk label, and an executive KPI page with the trends behind them. Both read from the same governed model as the WIP and project pages, and any project drills through to its detail.
How it works
- 1
Pick the executive questions
We agree the handful of figures leadership reviews, such as earned revenue, margin at completion, backlog, over/under billing and risk, and how each is defined.
- 2
Build on the shared model
The dashboard uses the same measures as the WIP and project pages, so totals tie across every view.
- 3
Add risk labels
Each project gets a rule-based label, for example no forecast, at risk, watch or on track, from its margin at completion.
- 4
Enable drill-through
Right-click any project to open a single-project view with budget, change orders and milestones.

The value it creates
Visibility
Portfolio to project to cost code in a few clicks, on figures refreshed nightly.
Better decisions
Leadership meetings start from current, agreed numbers instead of reconciling versions.
Collective intelligence
Executives, project managers and finance look at one model, so a question asked in one meeting has the same answer in the next.

Frequently asked questions
Is this a separate dashboard from our project reports?
No. It reads from the same semantic model, which is why the totals tie. A separate dashboard built on its own extracts tends to drift from the project reports within a few months.
Can executives see it on a phone?
Power BI supports mobile layouts, and we can design a phone view for the pages leadership checks most. Access follows your Microsoft 365 permissions.
How is the risk label decided?
In the built version: no forecast if margin at completion is blank, at risk below 0%, watch below 10%, otherwise on track. The thresholds are yours to set.
