Microsoft Fabric & Power BI API and integration guide

Fabric and Power BI are where construction data usually lands, not where it starts. Pipelines and notebooks write to a OneLake lakehouse; Power BI reads the semantic model. The limits that matter are refresh counts and API throttles.

API style
Power BI REST API, Fabric REST API, and OneLake's ADLS Gen2-compatible file endpoints. Ingestion usually runs in Data Factory pipelines and notebooks.
Authentication
Microsoft Entra ID app registration: delegated scopes, a service principal or a managed identity. Fabric APIs need the tenant setting allowing service principals; OneLake accepts only Storage-audience tokens.
Sandbox / developer program
Yes. A free 60-day Fabric trial capacity, which Microsoft limits per tenant and intends for evaluation.
Webhooks / events
Not applicable as a source; not confirmed for outbound events.
Rate limits
Refresh: 8 per day on shared capacity (scheduled and API refreshes combined), 48 scheduled slots on Premium. Fabric REST: 500 calls per minute per identity for platform APIs, 200 for job scheduler APIs. Push datasets: 10,000 rows per POST and 1,000,000 rows per hour per model.
Exports and files
SQL analytics endpoint over lakehouse tables, OneLake file access, and Power BI export APIs.
Marketplace / partner program
Microsoft AppSource. Not confirmed for Fabric workloads.

Notes and gotchas

  • Shared-capacity (Pro) models get eight refreshes a day in total, API refreshes included.
  • Push datasets have hard row and rate caps and Microsoft has scheduled real-time streaming for deprecation; land data in a lakehouse and refresh a semantic model instead.
  • Some ADLS tools don't accept the OneLake endpoint, and OneLake supports a subset of ADLS APIs.

Frequently asked questions

How many times a day can Power BI refresh?

Eight times a day on shared (Pro) capacity, counting scheduled and API refreshes together, and up to 48 scheduled slots on Premium or Fabric capacity.

Can a service principal call the Fabric and Power BI APIs?

Yes, for most APIs, once a Fabric admin enables the tenant setting that allows service principals. Check each API's identity support; push datasets don't work with service principal profiles.

How does construction data get into Fabric?

Usually through notebooks or pipelines that call each source API on a schedule, land raw payloads in a lakehouse, then clean, crosswalk and quality-check them before Power BI reads the model.
